The fertile valleys of the Euphrates and the Tigris turned into deserts, after full deforestation.
During usual winds of 3 – 4 meters per second, calm reigns inside of the forests.
Inside the forest the wind speed drops to half as compared to how it is outside. At 100 meters deep inside the forest, the speed drops to 25%, while at 200 meters – it drops to 2% of the initial speed.
Inside a mature forest, the soil erosion is below 0.2 tons of hectares per year, while on deforested lands situated on inclined slopes, the erosion may reach even 1,500 tons of hectares per year.
The forest vegetation retains about 600 kilograms of dust per hectare, annually.
